Jamie Fraser showdown: exciting finalists audition!

I thought it would be helpful if people could look at our contenders and imagine them not only looking like Jamie, but speaking his lines.

Here are our finalists (They all have at least one vote in the poll at left. Except Oz.) speaking lines from the book!

Which one of these men make the most convincing Jamie? You decide.

Max Martini:

Tell me if I’m too rough, or tell me to stop altogether if ye wish. Anytime until we are joined; I dinna think I can stop after that.

Seth Green, Oz from Buffy:

Aye, I mean to ride ye hard. Aye, beg me for mercy, Sassenach. Ye shallna have it though, not yet.

Gerard Butler:

While I dinna pretend to know all there is to know, I’ve lived a good bit of my life on a farm, and unless people are verra different from other animals, it isna going to take that long to do what we have to.

James Murray:

I’ve seen horses and cows, of course, pigs, chickens, doves, dogs, cats, red deer, squirrels, rabbits, wild boar, oh, and once even a pair of snakes. Did ye know snakes have two cocks? Male snakes, I mean.

Hayden Christiansen:

I didna realize that ye did it face to face. I thought ye must do it the back way, like; like horses, ye know.

Jensen Ackles:

I’m tired of having to watch ye very minute, for fear of what foolishness you’ll try next. And I’m verra tired of people trying to make me watch while they rape you! I dinna enjoy it a bit!

Russell Crowe:

I dinna know what’s a sadist. I said I would have to punish you. I did not say I wasna going to enjoy it.

Kevin McKidd:

You have my name and my family, my clan, and if necessary, the protection of my body as well. The man willna lay hands on ye again, while I live.

Gerard Butler, Take 2:

You’re my wife, like it or not. Did I want to break your arm, or feed ye naught but bread and water, or lock ye in a closet for days—and don’t think ye don’t tempt me, either—I could do that, let alone warm your bum for you.

Then I shall put a knee in your back and beat you ‘til my arm tires, and I warn ye, you’ll tire of it long before I do.

Gabriel Aubrey:

I didna realize that ye did it face to face. I thought ye must do it the back way, like; like horses, ye know.

Hugh Jackman:

Aye, I mean to use ye hard. Aye, beg me for mercy, Sassenach. Ye shallna have it though, not yet.

Russell Crowe, take 2:

I've seen a good many animals mate with each other, and most manage it without any advice at all. I would suppose people could do the same.

You gave Kevin the only serious line. I *heart* you, you nutty wench.

meljean brook said...

I have to ask, because I've never read the books -- are those real quotes?

*quietly laughing my head off*

Carolyn Jean said...

Nicola: Sorry! Somebody needs to dump water over my head.

T: I know. I want him to win.

Meljean: I can't believe you never read this! Yes, the lines are all real Jamie lines. I can only imagine how crazy they sound not knowing the book.

Renee said...

Meljean: Yes they are! They are a hoot, but make more sense in context. Jamie is a virgin, who has spent a lot of time educated in an abbey (when he wasn't on a farm.)

Carolyn Jean: OMG!! Awesome quotes! I was totally laughing like a maniac to my laptop. Makes me want to crack out the audiobooks again and give them a listen. My favorite audiobooks of all time.

Renee said...

Oh! and to plug my guy James Murray (and my sole vote), the closeup really shows his baby blues (much is made of Jamie's blue eyes.)

Carolyn Jean said...

Renee - It made me want to read this again. I know I was totally unfair in the quotes I chose. James Murray actually would be great. He works for all the quotes.

Tracy said...

Giving Kevin the only serious line...trying to sway the polls are you???? No fair!

Great quotes btw!

Sayuri said...

If I ever hear Jensen Ackles with a scottish accent I will spontaeously multiple orgasm!

Tell me again, was it two cocks for a snake?

Carolyn Jean said...

Tracy: You should see the screwed up quotes I had at first. You can imagine what scene I pulled them from, but I couldn't deal.

Sayuri: LOL Popcorn flies all over the theater!! Actually I'm surprised your Jensen isn't doing better.

Katiebabs a.k.a KB said...

*SWOON* When Jamie tells Clare how he is going to sex her up, I get all tingly. Oh my, oh my.

So glad you found the quotes you wanted.

GERRY!! Don't make me me say it again.

lisabea said...

Why did Rome not get two? I understand RC because he is GOODNESS AND LIGHT and woohoo quite the niblet, and I guess I can give Jerry Wassit two but MORE ROME!!

JenB said...

Jensen??? No. NO.

Gawd, I can't even take him seriously on that stupid CW show he does. He's pretty, but that's about it.

Kevin all the way. Or Gerard. I'm sure I could suffer through watching either one of them. ;)

Carolyn Jean said...

LB: I know, he should have gotten two. Do you have a quote to nominate? I only wanted to give him certain quotes.

JenB: Well! Sayuri is NOT going to be pleased to hear this.

lisabea said...

It is no secret that I have NOT read this book. I've been waiting for the movie. I don't want to ruin it, you know?

Carolyn Jean said...

You are SHITTING me! You have to read this book, LB. It's really suspenseful and exciting. And not as psycho as these quotes make it sound.

Katiebabs a.k.a KB said...

All the lassies must read Outlander and one of the sexiest heroes in all of romance, Jamie! He is a redhead. Can't go wrong with the redheads.

lisabea said...

Well, I can't read the back of a cereal box lately because I'm in that there dry spell.... That book is fricken HUGE. OMG. It's like as big as ... uh ... something really big and daunting!

Still, I hope Rome plays Jamie. Or RC. He can also play Michael.

Carolyn Jean said...

Yeah, what KB said.

LB, who cares if it's long, it's pure crack! Except maybe the first 50 pages.

Katiebabs a.k.a KB said...

the love Jamie and Clare have for one another is all consuming and much sexing going on.
Plus, since Jamie never had a woman, Clare teaches him all she knows.

Jessica said...

I can't believe any experienced romance reader (let alone author, ahem!) had not read Outlander. It's probably the greatest romance ever written! But even if you don't agree, you have to read it just to stay in the conversation.

Seth Green? Is that a joke?

Aubry all the way!

Carolyn Jean said...

Jessica: Seth was sort of a joke. Actually, a lot of this was sort of sporting.

Sarah said...

Face to face... snort.

Hayden, he is just droolworthy!

Jessica said...

Yep, I will definitely have to re-read. :) Oh, and I'm still for Kevin McKidd

What about Alan Tudyk as a possible Jamie?

Anonymous said...

Hugh Jackman!!!
maybe Russell Crowe.
Seth Green, Puhleezee..no way.
who's the redheaded dude with the blue eyes again, maybe him.
and a friend of mine who is Scottish says they'd better get the accent right.
I forgot how hot the book is.
whatt a way to stimulate the hormones, and the laughter...
I really appreciate that I found these books AFTER all 5 had been written. or I would have screamed and pulled my hair out waiting for the next one.

It SHOULD BE a HBO series so no details are left out.

kevin mckidd, no contest
and try alex o'loughlin as ian.
oh, and kate beckinsale is a better jenny. oh, and...

Anonymous said...

Jason Isaacs as Frank / Jack Randall and Kevin McKidd as Jamie all the way

Anonymous said...

i think there is an actor with great potential is being left out. With a different accent, and some good hair die, i think Josh Holloway could be a reasonable contender. He's just so darn smexy. Just like Jamie.

Lisa said...

I love that you put the photo of Russell Crowe in with Joaquin Phoenix, because HE IS JACK RANDALL! No?

Carolyn Crane (aka Carolyn Jean) said...

Oh, totally! He is Jack Randall! LOL

Djae said...

I too am sooo glad that I just started reading the books. I am on Drums of Autumn and I can't imagine having to wait for them to be written. I am in love with Jamie!!!!! I now have my husband reading them. I like Kevin too. Nobody likes MAX?

Anonymous said...

Outlander is my all time favorite book. I would say Butler, Aubry, Mckidd, or Martini could all fit the part. Everyone else doesn't even come close to looking the part.

Anonymous said...

Oh and for sure not crowe

Evos's wife said...

I have read all of Diana Gabaldon’s Jamie Frazer books. If you have never read them you REALLY should. Gerard Butler really would carry this part. Although he may be a little old for the early years of Jamie, I believe that they could make him look the part easily with his boyish good looks. I also thought that Brendan Frazer, if he lost some weight, could also carry this off.

nzkiwigirl said...

I know he's a model but can Gabriel Aubrey act if not can he take a crash course? In my mind he's the ideal Jamie, the only one with slanted eyes and real comely too.

Anonymous said...

Gabriel Aubrey -- at least he looks the way Jamie is described in the book -- how tall is he though?

John said...

Lynnette McB. adds:
I want to turn back the clock (quite) a few years, go to Inverness and find a likely set of standing stones.
I see James Murray, then Jensen Ackles or Kevin McKidd looking like Jamie. The choice will be very important to the millions of captivated readers. Diana should decide. She knows him better than any of us.

John said...

John hasn't said anything. Lynnette shares the email address and is the one in thrall.

Whenever I look at Hayden Christiansen's photo, I think "Hamlet"> Gabriel Aubrey is more like 'Puck' of "Midsummer Night's Dream" than a strong, serious Jamie.

Judi Rae Kesner said...

The minute I saw Kevin McKidd I thought, "My God that's Jamie Fraser!" I hadn't even picked up one of the books in over a year so it wasn't on my mind at the time. The only problem is, he...is....a....man. Well, that's not really a problem in my eyes but I don't think he could pass for 22. An older Jamie, yes. Too bad they couldn't find some look alike young thing for young Jamie and have Kevin McKidd be older Jamie. Maybe he has a younger brother? That would be too good to be true!

Anonymous said...

I could see Gerard Butler or Gabriel Aubrey.

I picture a Rufus Sewell type for Jack Randall.

theHedgehogsHippopotamus said...

hugh jackman!!!!!!!!! *swoon* evryone else is either too old or just too unJamielike. . . except maybe Gabriel Aubrey.. that being said i'm still going for hugh!

theHedgehogsHippopotamus said...

that being said, why is sean bean NOT on that list? has this crazy world turned UPSIDE DOWN?!?

Anonymous said...

PLEASE - PLEASE - PLEASE!!! Gabriel Aubrey!!! God only knows if he can act - but he's AMAZING looking!

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure if Gabriel Aubrey can act, but he is Jamie Fraser!!! I think he could pull off being young Jamie and the older Jamie as well......he just has the look, sexy, strong and confident!! Please seriously consider him!!!

Anonymous said...

What about Ewan McGregor... he's a Scot and wow

bvrlybest said...

What about Eric on TrueBlood. Blue eyes, right size and build. Needs some long red hair and he is perfect.

Leah said...

Gabriel Aubrey is exactly how I picture Jamie. The others just aren't quite right, even if I do love Gerard.

Sammie said...

Eric Stoltz is my pick. He played a scottish warrior in ROB ROY and has red hair. Perfect!

Anonymous said...

What a truly hysterical post! Love the quotes. My vote is for Aubrey... Can you run another casting call, runners up...?

Beth said...

paul bettany!

Garrett Hedlund would be the perfect (young) Jamie... just needs some red hair. Anyone see Troy?

This site has no merit when the nominate Seth Green. Seriously??

Anonymous said...

I think Henry Cavill from Showtime's The Tudors would make a good Jaime. He's tall, young, has light eyes, and smokin' hot.

huculak1111 said...

David Wenham all the way. A nose a little too big and slanted blue eyes. He has a great presence too! Not sure how tall he is though.

Anonymous said...

Gabriel Aubrey is the epitome of what I imagine Jamie to be..especially if he puts on a few pounds. I, too, am uncertain as to his acting abilities, but he's got the look! Gerard is smokin' hot, but too old...

Evos's wife said...

Okay, when is this film actually going to happen? By the time it really does take place everyone suitable for the parts will all be to old. I thought Christian Bale would be great as Frank and John Randle. But I suppose that he will be too old soon. Now I have come to the conclusion that there is no film at all and it is all a “red herring” just to get you to read the books. So that’s it with me, I have lost complete interest now.

Tracey W said...

Gabriel Aubrey for Jamie. Young and innocent enough (looking!), plus he has the blue eyes, and the attractiveness. Could totally imagine him as a 22yo Jamie Fraser.
I totally would love to see Jensen Ackles in there (with the right accent!) (he is so cool in Supernatural), but would want a strong featuring character for him - not Jamie though.
Is the movie even happening though? I mean its 2010, and the 7th book has just been released!!! (Boy I'm glad I didn't start reading the series until this year - I have the first 6 books already but can't wait to read the next book when I finish one!) :)

luella said...

gabriel aubrey certainly looks like jamie, but, i have always thought gerard butler was the obvious choice for jamie. come on, too old?, it's hollywood , for Gods sake! he IS jamie fraser. we all know it. so, what's the debate? and, unlike gabriel, who, i agree, is quite the looker, and looks like the description of jamie, excepting for the rough edges jamie is described as having, (gerard , ok). we all who have actually read all these books and speaking for myself, are now listening to the series on c.d. in my car, everywhere i go, even staying in my car and not going into the house or wherever else i am going, because i am at a good part, face it, its all the good part. if you haven't read the series or listened to it on c.d., then, get off this comment area, you know not of what you speak. hey, my opinion, take it.

Anonymous said...

jamie is only 23. Gerard butler, hugh jackman, Russell Crowe,
Kevin McKidd,Max Martini ? you must be kidding. they are too old for playing jamie. I would choose Robert Pattinson. He is the right age, handsome and good actor...

Anonymous said...

I think the biggest thing you have to remember is that a 22 yo then wouldn't look as young as a 22 yo today. They had harder lives, as all of us who know Jamie's background know. But more importantly.... even at 22 he is described as a HUGE man. I don't think Robert could pull that off short of taking some HGH!!! I think Kevin (personal fav) or Gerald would be great in this role because you can make them look a little younger although I don't think they would need much but they have the physical size... hair can be dyed. I think no matter who you cast you will need to put in colored contacts since I don't believe they will find anyone with the eyes she has described in the books. just my opinions though

Nice choices, great quotes! My vote is still for the strapping Kevin Durand. He is a 6'6" tree of a man with brilliant blue cat eyes. See him with cast members from the upcoming Robin Hood movie at http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2410581248/nm0243806 Providing they cast this bloody thing sometime soon, he is still young enough to play a young Jamie & has the grit to play the older man. He speaks fluent french, in my opinion, very important for Jamie! He has a great sense of humor, is charming & my JHRC, will ya look at the lad?!

It's Chris Hemsworth!
Check out this video - he is PERFECT for Jamie! He is tall (6'3''), wonderfully built and has a stunning face with the bluest slanted eyes you've ever seen.

I have just watched the video for Chris Hemsworth. You know you could be right. He would be perfect for Jamie. He has the perfect presence, height, good looks we imagine Jamie to have, perfect blue eyes. Yes he will do. Mind you, by the time this production takes place he will also be too old don’t you think? GET ON WITH IT.

Max or Gabriel - either would do. If Seth Green were taller he would be perfect!

Gabriel Aubrey, I cant think of anyone that could possibly embody Jamie more. The only flaw is his acting ability...

I think I am the only male who has read this series and actually expressed interest, is it odd that I'm a sixteen year old guy?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone other than me considered Paul Bettany as Jamie Fraser? He is perfect in my view. He has the facial features, the height and the colouring plus he's delicious. I thought he would need to bulk out a bit but after seeing the poster for Legion.....

Anonymous said...

Gabriel Aubrey all the way! Geesh, he makes me melt to look at him. I'm listening to the audio book and can't believe I never read these. I'm loving the audio version! Can't wait to see Jamie on screen. ***SK in Dallas, TX

I'm sorry, I just can't picture Oz as Jamie without laughing. Especially with that quote you chose.

Now I could totally see Kevin McKidd as Jamie.

Has anyone thought of Theo James for Jamie and Christian Bale for Frank/Jack?

Gabriel Aubrey is nice :-)

I'm just listening to the books for the 1st time and all I think about is Gerard Butler as Jamie...such a man's man & the women just drop like flies...GERARD BUTLER ALL THE WAY!!!!!
Gotta get back to the book...
oxoxoxox

shrosexo said...

In Outlander the 1st book Jamie is only 22, although he may look a bit older given the harsh living of the times I do not believe anyone over 40 would fit. Also Jamie is 6'4" and is suppose to stand out because of his height and think they need someone at least 6'3" and need a complextion that will work with the red hair.
That said my vot would go to Alexander Skarsgård who is only in his 30's and is 6'4" and 2nd Chris Hemsworth beacuse he is 6'3" and only 27.

Kevin McKIdd!!!!
He was GREAT in Rome and good in ER.
