Greetings from frozenland! global ebook, book #3 + winners...

Our downstairs neighbor's dog, the cutest dog ever!
Today I took the neighbor's dog for a walk and it is so cold that I wore TWO HATS. That's right, one hat covering the other. And the dog has to wear these little booties because his paws freeze out there, and he lost one in the three feet of snow, and so I spent a good deal of time sitting in somebody's yard, rooting around in the dog's paw holes where he romped around, trying to find the lost bootie. And it will be in the -20's tonight. Any and all expressions of shocked sympathy are welcome! Please leave them in the comments!

I have much to announce.

English language ebooks of Mind Games and Double Cross: soon available globally!
Like many authors, I am unhappy when my English language ebooks are not available worldwide for readers who want to buy them. If you are, say, in India or Germany, you can buy the print of Mind Games or Double Cross from Book Depository and even get free shipping, but you can't buy the digital edition legally there, or in most places outside North America.

Winter in Denmark by Nico/Nils Jepsen
where digital versions of my book
will soon be available!
I'm only just learning about this whole complicated business of geographic restrictions and so forth (Courtney Milan did an excellent writeup here). But, it got me looking at my contract and my situation, and discussing things with my agent, and, while some authors don't control the worldwide portion of their digital rights, it became clear that I did, to an extent. At least, outside North America and related territories. So, the trick was to hook up with a strong and nimble digital publisher who could publish and sell the digital editions worldwide, but restrict it from the places where I'd sold the rights to Random House.

Anyway, I'm now working with the awesome Untreed Reads, a publisher who is doing just that. I don't know exactly when my ebooks become available globally, but likely February or March. They put out a lot of awesome books, and they are doing a new cover for this edition and everything. Yay!!

And what about Book #3????
Good things are happening for book #3! It spent some time as a homeless orphan child, and I was FREAKING OUT, as anybody who has read Double Cross might imagine. I know I haven't been talking about that. Frankly, I was quite bummed, and there was all this uncertainty. As an artist, I was simply continuing to write book #3 regardless, because I am super into it, and I believe in it fiercely. But the whole publishing end was up in the air. It's not a good time for a small and quirky series like mine.

Diana's new covers are fabulous.
So is this series.
But things are looking up. Book #3 is really close to getting a new home with an awesome publisher and a fabulous editor I've been dying to work with. I won't say more until the T's are dotted and the I's are crossed and a release date is firm. Except that I am so happy and relieved. I feel passionate about these characters, and so much happens in that book. Everything happens in that book...including a wedding with Simon as a bridesmaid. *throws confetti* Stay tuned!

Winners!
I've become a terrible blogger! It seems just yesterday that I did my release day post (below), and promised to give away two books. Well, the winners were chosen by random.org, and they chose their books. I'm happy to announce a certain Cherry Mischievous picked Ava Gray's Skin Heat, and the lovely Dottie will be getting Secrets of the Demon by Diana Rowland.

I've purchased your previous 2 books and will read them when the third is released. Can't wait to hear your announcement.

It sucks that you had to look for another publisher. As a reader, I thank you for persevering!

I'm so sick of winter! I know I say this every Jan/Feb but I REALLY mean it this time :)

Congrats to the winners, and congrats to you for finding a good home for Book #3, and for the #1 and #2 ebooks (outside of North America)!

And the only reason I'm going outside tomorrow is to take out the trash, dammit.

I cannot wait for book three. I'm officially a die hard Disillusionist fangrl. I'm so sorry you had to hunt for another home, but I'm crossing my fingers and toes for you.

KB: Slankets ahoy! Thanks, honey!

Anon: Hey, thanks for getting the books! And thanks for stopping by.

Mandi: Yes, it drags on, and it's not even feb.

Chris: Ooh, somebody working from home. Yeah! Have they plowed your poor alley yet?

Pamela: So relieved. Thanks!!

Stephanie: Oh, you are sweet to say that. Updates hopefully soon.

Fallon: Oh, well, that's publishing these days, but luckily, there are lots of ways to go now.

They did!

Although it doesn't matter, because my car is being erratic again. *sigh*

Hallelujah and major congrats! I would have died—that's right, DIED—if there was no book #3.

Carolyn,

So glad to hear that book 3 is close to finding a home! Though I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I love your books. I'll follow you wherever you go :-)

Hi Carolyn!

Thanks so much for the awesome giveaway!! And I'm feeling your pain for the frozen temperatures. My kids' school as already used up their allotted snow days and are working on "ACTS OF GOD" days...lol...blizzards are acts of God, right? (as well as below frakking zero freezing cold days) Oi, can believe it's been so snowy and cold... and this could go on for the next 2 months at least.

I'll be waiting patiently for more info about book #3, I know it will be fabulous!!

Dottie :)

Oh my Carolyn, I had no idea the future of Book #3 was so uncertain! Figuring how utterly fantastic and popular the first 2 books were, I never thought there could be some reason to worry!! I couldn't imagine not reading Book#3, oh, you really brought almost a heart attack on me!! Ok, crossing all my fingers and toes and hope to here some reassuring great news soon!

And congrats and thanks on taking into your own hands the daunting task of making sure your international fans could get access to your books digitally!

And oh my, 2 hats!! I wouldn't want to go out in such cold :-( *brrr* If you can stay home in the warm, I can't wait for spring to finally arrive! I hate freezing while waiting for the bus, and I don't want to wear gloves any more! :-(

Have a great and relaxing weekend! :-)

ps: and congrats to the lucky winners! :-)

I've been out of the loop, as I had no idea there was any trouble with book #3. I personally can't wait for book #3! I need to see what happens to Justine, Otto, and Packard. I agree with KB, your minions want this book!

Sorry about the crazy freezing temps. We have snow once again in Nashville. Not lots, and it is on top of ice, but since we don't have equipment to take care of it, it doesn't go away fast.

I am so embarrassed for you Carolyn! You have a HUGE typo in this article. When you described your series as "small and quirky", what you meant to say was "epic and mind-blowing". The cold must really be getting to you.

Carolyn Crane said...

Hey, thanks so much you guys! For the kind words (and the commiseration on the cold!) xxoooooooo You rock.

Dude, you are AWESOME! I'm going to find out about my contract and see if I can be just like you.

I was just about to send you a WHERE IS 3? email, LOL.

Am so, so glad to hear good news about Book #3! It's crazy, CRAZY that it didn't have a home. Sometimes this business doesn't make any sense, but I'm glad this one has a happy ending.

Julie said...

Okay wait...does that mean there was a chance that book 3 wasn't going to happen?! That you would have had to print it on your computer and sell it on the street corner?! OMG I don't think I can breathe right now! Oh wait, but it's all resolved. So it's okay to breathe now. No need for a hunger strike. That's good, but I'm crazy when I'm hungry...
Congrats Carolyn!

The dog lost a PAW in the snow? No, a bootie! But still, very cold. So glad Dis 3 is coming in to warm by the fire.

I must have dropped off the planet or something because I hadn't realised there was a problem with Bk3. I'm glad it's (nearly) sorted though!

Also, as an antipodean reader, thank you thank you thank you for looking into your digital rights/geo restrictions and then thank you thank you thank you for going to a publisher (thank them too!) who can release them as ebooks to me and others like me. I think I'm in love. :)

Crossing my frozen fingers and toes for book 3!!!

Did you ever find the dog bootie???

Am absolutely rapt for you that #3 might haev a new home! Keeping fingers crossed!

And YAH for the eBook sorting! As someone who lives in a geographically restricted country (LOL) it's nice when things are available, especially considering the Internet makes us so global :)

Oh my gosh! I originally read book one and two- adored them... told my sister about them- she went out and bought them and binged on them for 2 days and LOVED them- and now we telling everyone we know to go get these. They are so great (we love that they are so unique)- we've even done re-reads. :) Sorry about all the drama with publishing, but a great series will never go unnoticed!! Much luck and I will be first in line to buy #3 when it comes out! Take care!

Carolyn Crane said...

Thanks you guys for all the kind words and support! You are awesome. You make this semi-newbie author so happy this morning.

"Relieved" doesn't begin to cover how I feel about book #3 getting a home - you can't just end with a cliffhanger and then go "And that's the end, sorry!"

Any idea if book #3 will be a summer or fall release? I'm DYING to read it!

Carolyn Crane said...

Calliope! Thanks for the comment. Wouldn't that be maddening to not have a book #3? And it's been quite the cliffhanger finding a pub willing to take a risk on my lone orphan 3. Anyway, late in the year is when it will come out, likely. And, likely digital will come out first (which makes me feel terrible for my print readers.) But the book will be out and available to everybody eventually, that's the important thing.
